More than 70 million Americans suffer from digestive problems each year. Activia yogurt has recently been introduced by the Dannon Company in White Plains, N.Y. They say it is the first and only probiotic yogurt that is clinically proven to help regulate the digestive system naturally in two weeks, when eaten daily as part of a healthy and balanced diet. Each 4-oz serving contains billions of beneficial cultures, including the exclusive Bifidus Regularis. Bifidus Regularis is the commercial name for the proprietary strain of Bifidobacterium in Activia. Specialists at Dannon selected Bifidus Regularis for Activia because it survives passage through the digestive tract, arriving in the colon as a living culture.
Even a mild digestive problem can ruin a person’s day according to Michael Roizen, MD, Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, and author of New York Times #1 Bestseller: Real Age: Are You As Young As You Can Be “With Activia, there is finally a great-tasting food that helps regulate your digestive system.” Clinical studies have shown Activia helps reduce intestinal transit time by up to 40%, depending on levels consumed and the demographic profile. The product is particularly effective in healthy individuals with a slow transit time,” said Miguel Freitas, Scientific Affairs Manager at The Dannon Company.
For individuals whose digestive system is functioning regularly, Activia has no adverse effects and provides all the benefits expected of a traditional yogurt. Studies showed that consumption of one or two 125 g servings a day significantly reduced intestinal transit time, both in subjects with moderate transit time and in those with long transit time. Two servings per day were more effective. The action of Activia persisted for at least two weeks after the end of consumption of one serving and for at least four weeks after the end of ingestion of two servings.
Dr. Roizen said, “Those who experience irregularity can take several measures to help get their digestive system back on track, like drinking more water, consuming more high fiber foods, such as fruits and vegetables, exercising more often, and eating Activia daily for two weeks.” said Dr. Roizen “Activia, with its probiotic cultures, provides an innovative and good-tasting new way to help address this all too-common problem.” And if that isn’t enough good news, Activia is a great source of calcium and contains five grams of protein in each 4 oz. serving.
As defined by the World Health Organization, probiotics (“for life”) is a living microorganism that, when administered in adequate amounts, confers a health benefit on its host (beyond good nutrition.) For a culture to be genuinely probiotic, it must be safe to eat, remain alive for the shelf life of the product and be present in a high enough quantity to have a beneficial effect. Bifidus Regularis meets all those requirements and is considered a true probiotic. Its benefits are due, in part, to the effects of these “friendly” bacteria on different intestinal functions.
Scientific research continues to uncover the many potential benefits of probiotics; studies show that certain probiotics play a major role in the intestinal ecosystem by producing organic acids and reducing the pH. Certain probiotics may also have an affect on allergies, infections, blood cholesterol levels or high blood pressure.
Activia was first introduced in 1987 in France. It is one of Groupe Danone’s best-selling yogurt products globally with sales in 24 countries, primarily Europe and Asia. Activia comes in six flavors: Blueberry, Mixed Berry, Peach, Prune, Strawberry and Vanilla. It is packaged in 4-oz cups and sold in multi-packs of four or eight cups. It is available at most grocery stores and at Sam’s Club.
Are you lactose intolerant Some people have trouble digesting lactose, a carbohydrate in milk and mild products. Their intestines do not produce enough of the enzyme lactase, necessary to digest lactose. The condition can cause cramps. bloating and diarrhea. It may help to eat yogurt that contains live and active cultures. The friendly bacterial or cultures “pre-digest” or break down the lactose. For this reason, yogurt may be tolerated.
Activia yogurt is really delicious. It has an appealing, smooth texture and contains flavorful fruit pieces. It satisfies in a delectably simple way. Try it plain or spoon it over granola, fresh sliced fruit or cooked oatmeal. A Dannon product you also might enjoy is “la Crème Mousse.” The little 2.6 ounce cups are really indulgent and delicious. The yogurt is rich and creamy and whipped into a luscious texture that melts in your mouth. The mousse version is mild and made with a bit of cream. There are several fruit flavors and one with bits of chocolate.
