Award-winning cookbook author Nathalie Dupree will be at The Happy Bookseller at 5 p.m. Thursday signing copies of her latest book “Nathalie Dupree’s Shrimp & Grits Cookbook” (Gibbs Smith, $21.95). The book was written in collaboration with her good friend Marion Sullivan, food editor of the beautiful Charleston Magazine.
Grits are made from a process of milling corn kernels. They are nutritious, offering calcium, iron and B Vitamins. Nathalie and Marion share their secrets for preparing the best grits you will ever eat! I have tasted several of the recipes that were prepared by Nathalie and they were all delicious. I especially like her method for preparing Microwaved Grits with Cream and Cheese. Fast and absolutely fabulous!
Grits are not only for breakfast. They are good as a main dish, side dish, appetizer or dessert. You will love the Madeira-Glazed Shrimp with Parmesan Grits and Red-Eye Gravy – a recipe guaranteed to wow your guests any time, whether a leisurely brunch or Sunday supper.
The Southern Cheese Grits with Tomato Conserve and Shrimp is also devine, as well as the Frittered Grits.
Peach and Grits Parfait, White Bread with Grits and Peach and Grits Cobbler are other creative, clever ways to use this tasty food.
Nathalie and Marion give you all the grits basics plus several useful methods for cooking shrimp. For tailgating/bowl game treats try Nathalie’s Hush Hubbies (instead of Hush Puppies), cleverly named by her husband, author Jack Bass.
Marion Sullivan’s Shrimp and Grits was inspired by a special recipe from a North Carolina restaurant owned by the late, legendary Bill Neal.
My other personal favorites include Grits with Greens and Shrimp and the lovely recipe, Cheese Grits Souffle with Shrimp Sauce.
Nathalie Dupree’s Shrimp & Grits Cookbook offers several fine family-style recipes from noted Lowcountry chefs. This cookbook is a real treasure. Make an effort to drop by The Happy Bookseller tomorrow evening to say hello to Nathalie and pick up an autographed copy.
Be sure to have a bag of grits waiting for you at home- you will want to start cooking these recipes right away!
